The right-hand column of a Nutrition Facts panel is the only part of the label built for comparison. It is also the part most often misread, because it is not about you. The percentages are measured against a fixed reference person, and knowing exactly which one — and where the numbers get rounded on the way — changes what the label is worth.
The short version
- %DV is anchored to a 2,000-calorie day, not to your calorie needs. It is a common yardstick, not a personal target.
- Three lines have no %DV at all — total sugars, trans fat and protein — and each for a different reason.
- “0 g” is a rounding result, not a measurement. Under 0.5 g of fat per serving is printed as zero.
- Sodium is rounded in 10 mg steps above 140 mg, and calories in 10-calorie steps above 50.
- Use it to compare two packages, not to add up a day. That is what it is accurate enough for.
- 5% DV or less is low; 20% DV or more is high. That one rule covers most of the panel.
What a Daily Value actually is
The FDA’s definition is short: “DVs are the recommended amounts of nutrients to consume or not to exceed each day.” The %DV on a package is simply the amount in one serving expressed as a share of that number.
The reference behind it is a 2,000-calorie day. The FDA states that this figure is “used as a general guide for nutrition advice” — which is the polite way of saying it was chosen so that every package in the country uses the same yardstick. If you eat 1,600 calories or 2,800, the percentages on the shelf do not change, and they are not meant to.
That is not a flaw. A shared reference is exactly what makes two boxes of cereal comparable. It only becomes a problem when someone treats 100% DV as a personal daily quota.
The numbers behind the percentages
Every %DV on every label is calculated from this table. Learning even two rows of it lets you skip the percentage column entirely:

The Daily Values come from the FDA’s Daily Value table; the two right-hand columns are calculated from them. The three lines with no percentage — and why

The protein case surprises people. If a package does show a protein %DV, that is a choice, and it usually accompanies a protein claim on the front. Its absence says nothing about the product.
Rounding: why “0 g” is not zero
This is the part almost no guide explains, and it changes how you read small numbers. The rounding rules live in 21 CFR 101.9, and they are specific:

What this means in practice. A product declaring “0 g trans fat” may contain up to 0.49 g per serving. Eat three servings and you have eaten up to about 1.5 g of something the label called zero. The same applies to “0 calories” drinks at up to 4 calories a serving. None of this is deception — it is the rounding the regulation requires — but it is why the ingredient list matters as a cross-check, and why servings per container is the number to read first.

How to use the column properly
%DV is at its most accurate when it is doing the job it was designed for: putting two packages on the same scale. It is at its least useful when treated as an accounting system for the day.
- Do: compare two products in the same category on one or two lines — usually sodium and added sugars.
- Do: use 5% and 20% as the thresholds rather than reading every percentage precisely.
- Don’t: try to reach 100% of everything. The Daily Values are a labelling reference, not a checklist.
- Don’t: compare percentages between two products whose serving sizes differ. Check those match first.

FAQ
Is %DV based on my calorie needs?
No. It is anchored to a 2,000-calorie day so that every package uses the same reference. Your own needs may be higher or lower, and the percentages do not adjust.
Why does Total Sugars have no percentage?

Does 100% DV mean I have had enough for the day?
Only against the 2,000-calorie reference, and only for that nutrient. For nutrients to limit, such as sodium and saturated fat, the DV is a ceiling rather than a goal.
Does “0 g” mean the food contains none?
No. Rounding rules allow anything under 0.5 g per serving to be declared as zero, and under 5 calories to be declared as zero calories.
Why doesn’t my food show a protein percentage?
Because it is not required on standard labels. A Daily Value for protein exists at 50 g, but manufacturers only have to declare the grams.
