Fruity homemade oatmeal: rolled oats simmered in water with a chopped apple, raisins and cinnamon for five minutes. Half the pot is about 197 calories with 5 g protein and 6 g fibre, and there is no added sugar — the apple and raisins sweeten it.

Leave the skin on the apple for more fibre, as the source suggests. Add the oats to boiling water, then drop the heat and stir often; old-fashioned oats take five minutes and stay chewy.

Makes two servings. Leftover oatmeal keeps two days in the fridge and reheats with a splash of water or milk.
