This fruit dip is plain nonfat yogurt with vanilla, cinnamon and a teaspoon of brown sugar across the whole bowl. Two tablespoons come to about 17 calories and 1.3 g of protein, so a fruit platter stops being just fruit without turning into the sugar-and-cream-cheese version.

One teaspoon of brown sugar in a cup of yogurt is barely sweet on its own — the vanilla and cinnamon are doing most of the work. Stir it properly until no grains are left, then taste against an actual apple slice rather than off the spoon, because the fruit carries plenty of its own sugar.

It takes five minutes and keeps four days, so it is the easiest thing to bring to a holiday table. Set it in the middle of a platter of apple and pear slices, clementine segments and grapes, and toss the cut apples in lemon juice so they stay pale for the evening.

Servings
1
  • Yogurt (Plain, Nonfat)2 tablespoons (31 g)
  • Brown sugar1/8 teaspoon (0.5 g)
  • Vanilla extract1/8 teaspoon
  • Ground cinnamona pinch
Cook’s tips
  • Taste the dip on a piece of fruit, not off the spoon. Fruit brings its own sugar and the dip should stay on the plain side.
  • Use thick Greek-style yogurt if you want it to hold on a strawberry instead of sliding off.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and use within four days; do not leave the bowl out on a warm table for more than two hours.
  • Contains: milk (nonfat yogurt).
  • For a dairy-free platter use unsweetened plain soy or coconut yogurt; naturally gluten-free as written.

Method

  1. Wash your hands and all surfaces before you start.
  2. Put the yogurt in a bowl.
  3. Add the vanilla, cinnamon and brown sugar.
  4. Stir well until the sugar has dissolved and the cinnamon is evenly spread.
  5. Taste with a slice of fruit and adjust the cinnamon if needed.
  6. Serve with sliced apples, pears, clementines or grapes.
  7. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and use within four days.
