Estimated result

Navy Method estimate. Results may vary from DEXA or hydrostatic testing.

    Why use this calculator

Body fat percentage is more informative than BMI or scale weight alone. Two people with identical weight and height can have very different body compositions. Knowing your fat-to-lean ratio helps you set realistic targets and measure whether changes on the scale reflect fat loss or muscle gain.

    How to use this calculator

Select your sex, then enter your height, neck circumference, and waist circumference. Women also need to enter hip circumference. All measurements should be taken at the narrowest/widest point. Press Calculate to see your estimated body fat percentage, category, and lean mass.

    What the result means

Body fat percentage is estimated using the US Navy circumference method, which uses the difference between waist and neck (and hip for women) relative to height. Lean body mass is the remaining weight after subtracting estimated fat.

    Important limitations

The Navy method is a convenient estimate but less precise than DEXA scanning or hydrostatic weighing. Measurement technique significantly affects accuracy.

    FAQ

Where should I measure my waist?

At the navel level for men; at the narrowest point for women.

How accurate is this compared to DEXA?

Typically within 3–4% for most people, but measurement errors compound quickly.

What body fat % is healthy?

Generally 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women, but optimal ranges vary by age and sport.
