FAQ

Can I substitute oil with applesauce in all recipes?

Applesauce works best in baked goods like muffins, cakes and quick breads. It adds natural sweetness and moisture but will not work for frying or sautéing. Replace at a 1:1 ratio, but reduce any added sugar slightly.

Does replacing oil with butter change the calories?

Butter contains about 80% fat vs. 100% for oils. Replacing 100 g of oil with 100 g of butter saves roughly 80 kcal and adds a richer flavour, but slightly changes texture due to milk solids.

Is coconut oil a healthy substitute for vegetable oil?

Coconut oil is higher in saturated fat, so current dietary guidelines suggest moderation. It has a distinct flavour and a high smoke point, making it a good 1:1 swap for baking and medium-heat cooking.

Why use this calculator

Different oils and fats have different fat profiles, calorie densities, smoke points, and flavour characteristics. A direct 1:1 substitution without adjustment can change texture, nutrition, and cooking performance significantly. This calculator gives you the correct gram amount for any swap.

How to use this calculator

Enter the amount of oil your recipe requires, choose the original oil type and select your preferred substitute. Press Calculate to get the exact replacement amount.

What the result means

The result is the gram or ml equivalent of your chosen substitute. Note that substitutes like applesauce change texture and are suitable for baking only, while others such as avocado oil or ghee work in both cooking and baking.

Important limitations

Substitutions affect flavour, texture, and smoke point. For frying and high-heat cooking, only use oils with a high smoke point such as avocado oil or ghee.
